The Table of Christ

Before Christ was condemned to die on Calvary, He and his disciples shared one last meal together. This meal, the Passover, reminded the Jews of God's rescue from their slavery in Egypt. When we practice the Lord's Supper today, we are reminded of Christ's atoning sacrifice on the cross, His provision of the Holy Spirit, and that we are saved into a community of believers.

Watchfulness

When Jesus is prophesying the impending destruction of Jerusalem, we can see a warning of the same sort given to us. There will be a day of judgment, and for those of us who are in Christ, we can celebrate the approaching kingdom of God. Be vigilant in prayer, and steadfast in your commitment, as the approaching kingdom will be marked by persecution and trials. But know, that as difficulties increase, that Christ will strengthen us through the Spirit, and empower us to be faithful witnesses for God.

Give Yourself to God

Christ is called the cornerstone because He is the foundation on which we must build our lives on if we are to enjoy eternal life. As we build on this foundation, we become imitators of Christ, becoming more like Him every day. But for this glorious transformation to happen, our old selves must be put away and the new man will be created in it's place, a glorious joy that will become an eternal blessing.

Who will be King?

The Jewish people had been waiting for centuries for the arrival of the prophesied and promised King, who would come and establish His reign in Jerusalem. However, Jesus laments over Jerusalem knowing that the Israelites will reject Him, and that because of this rejection, will face the judgment of God. We have the same choice today. Will we choose to follow Christ, or reject Him? The answer to that question is the difference between life or death.

The Economics of the Kingdom

In becoming humble, and submitting to the authority of Christ, we commit ourselves to engaging in the work that God has planned for us. Each follower has been given certain gifts and circumstances in their lives that can lead to opportunities for displaying the Gospel. We must become faithful stewards, striving to glorify God more with the time and resources that we have, ready to give an account to the King.

How Can Someone Be Saved?

To follow Christ, we must give up the idols in our lives that distract us from fully glorifying God. When gifts from God become ultimate things in our lives, we are drawn away from Christ rather than towards Him. When we make this sacrifice, and follow Him, we understand that our true treasure lies in a perfect eternal relationship with God, one that we must make known to the world, and pray that others will join us in.

Receiving the Kingdom

Jesus taught that his kingdom was like the dawning of the sun. It dawned in his first coming and is already here. It is rising in power until it is fully consummated in his second coming. Luke 17:20-18:17 teach us how to persevere in between the times. We should pray and receive the kingdom with humility. Our simple prayer should be: "God, be merciful to me, a sinner."

Traits of Growing Disciples

The events that unfolded at the Boston Marathon often lead to questions of why suffering and evil occurs so often in this world. The Gospel answers by telling us that we live in a fallen and sinful world that can never be restored by any effort of our own. However, Christ came to redeem and restore us to himself, making it possible to eventually live a perfect life in fellowship with Him. In our short time we have to live on this earth, He has made us free to extend grace, forgive, serve, and love mankind. Let your faith in Him take root in your soul and prepare for the work He sets before you.

Faithfulness, Faith & Our Final Destination

How we view our possessions is a good indication of our faithfulness to God in our lives. When we are fully surrendered to God's authority, we become faithful stewards of our time, money, and especially in our relationships with others. Jesus warns us that eternal punishment awaits those who abuse riches, and refuse to repent and surrender themselves to God. The good news is that in Jesus' death this doesn't have to be our fate! Repent and follow Him, and He will lead us into eternal life

The Prodigal Love of God

Luke 15 contains one of the most famous stories in the Bible, the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Perhaps it should be called the Parable of the Prodigal Love of God. In it we see how the gospel saves the irreligious and religious through the audacious, gracious, affectionate, forgiving, and joyful love of God.

The Priorities and Paradox of Easter

The death of Christ was a self-sacrifice made by the perfect and holy Son of God, so that we may have eternal life through Him. This death and life paradox teaches us that we must be willing to sacrifice our desires, and even ourselves if we truly are following Christ. We do not do this in sorrow and remorse, but have inexplicable joy that comes only from the strength and power of Christ in us. Commit yourself to Him, and see with the eyes of your heart what is the immeasurable greatness of Christ's provision for us through His sacrifice on the cross, and in our lives every day!

Ready for His Return

In this passage of Luke, we are reminded that tomorrow is never promised to us, and that we should be living our lives accordingly. Christ commands us to be ready stewards, demonstrating our wise obedience to Him and His work for us on this earth.
There are many circumstances that can cause anxiety and fear in our lives. As disciples of Christ, we should ultimately put our faith in Him to provide for us even in times of great difficulty, knowing that He has already given us the greatest gift in salvation.
Gospel Driven Work

The work of Christ was done perfectly, so that the Father would be glorified, and man could enter into eternal life. When we follow Christ, we become motivated and energized to follow in His footsteps of glorifying the Father in our own work. Even though we can never accomplish this perfectly like Christ, The Spirit grants us the strength, boldness, and direction to perform our work greatly, and to go into our lives sharing the Gospel with co-workers, friends, and family.

Working as a City Within a City

When we are saved into Christ, we are sealed as eternal members in God's Kingdom. While the perfect city of God awaits us, we can work and pray for our fellow inhabitants in the city of man to become citizens of Heaven. Let's be the tools that God uses to cultivate and grow a new generation of believers and do all our work to the praise of His Glory!

The Masks of God: Understanding Work as Vocation

Have you ever thought to yourself, "What is my purpose in life, what am I called to do?" The bible teaches us that all of our work, regardless of the occupation, can be to the glory of God and to the spreading of His kingdom on earth. Let's turn our work into service towards others, and fulfill our roles as member's of the church body, spreading the truth and love of God wherever we work!

Why Work Matters

God has been working since before the foundations of the world, and since we are created in His image, that means we are made to work as well. However, because of the fall, work has become corrupted, and we often turn it into an idol in our lives, despite the fact that it leaves no lasting satisfaction, and even adds to our levels of stress and anxiety. Make the commitment to living your life for God, and find that lasting fulfillment in every aspect of your life, including work!

Religion and the Gospel

Following Christ does not mean we need to follow a legalistic twelve step program of salvation. The Gospel cleanses our hearts, removes our burdens, and unlocks the answers to scripture, while religion becomes a test of man's ability to be 'good enough.' If you want to find assurance of God's Grace in your life, then turn to the pages of the Gospel, and listen to the words of Christ, His truth shall set you free!

Take Care to Keep God's Word

Christ tells us that true blessedness comes from both the hearing and the keeping of God's word. God has revealed himself to us throughout scripture and has called us to examine His word, store it in our hearts, and live according to the example that Christ has set. When we do keep His word, we become a light in the midst of darkness, revealing the knowledge of His righteousness and love to all.

Own the Mission: RHC 2013 Vision Sermon

When Christ tells us how to pray in Luke 11, we realize that we turn towards the absolute sovereignty of God in absolute persistence, making us dependent on the Spirit in our lives. When we consider RHC in 2013, we can apply this approach for both congregational goals and our own ministry goals within the congregation. Will we be a people obedient to the Father, who hunger to see the City within a City multiply in the greater Medford area and throughout the world?

Resolved to Love. Resolved to Live.

In the parable of "The Good Samaritan", Jesus ultimately tells us that everyone and anyone who is in need is our neighbor. In the parable, we are shown how the Samaritan goes to extraordinary lengths in showing compassion and mercy towards the beaten and broken man. The only way to live out the neighborly love exemplified in this picture, is to prioritize our relationship with Christ and to listen to Him speak through the learning of His Gospel.

The Day of Atonement

It is our sin that separates us from a perfect and holy God, and the just punishment of that sin is eternal spiritual death spent apart from Him. The Israelite's practiced the Day of Atonement annually in order that they may repent of the nation's sins against God. Now that Christ has come, lived the perfect life, died on the cross, and rose again, we can rest on His once and for all atonement that has defeated sin, and made it possible to live in eternity with God!

The Cost of Christ: Part 1

Deitrich Bonhoeffer said, "Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of the church. We are fighting today for costly grace." Costly grace is what Jesus lays out in Luke 9 as he calls people to the radical cost of following him. The cost of Christ is the cost of his cross. Amazingly, the rewards are even greater! *Apologies for the abbreviated audio. We only captured the end of the sermon.

Luke shows us that Jesus has power and authority over the natural and supernatural forces in existence. His disciples react in amazement, the demons cower in fear, and Jairus falls to his knees at Jesus' feet. If we, like Jairus, are falling to our knees in worship, then we should be moved to proclaim Christ's name to our friends, family, and the world!

He was anointed with the Spirit to preach the Word and display the coming kingdom through good deeds. We must engage in the same mission of word and deed.

Worship Driven Mission

John Piper says, "Missions exists because worship doesn't." This is exactly we see with Paul in Athens in Acts 17:16-34. His jealousy for God's glory moved him to a clear and contextual witness to Christ. What's the point for us? The desire for God to be worshiped should fuel our mission to make God known.

Titus 1:5-9 teaches us that church leadership is essential and in all appearances it should reflect Christ. Our guest preacher on June 24 was Todd Burus who will be leading a new church plant in Charlestown beginning in the fall of 2013.

An Introduction to Titus: Good Doctrine and Good Deeds

Beyond just introducing the author and recipients, Paul lays out the purpose of his apostleship, which corresponds well to the purpose of his writing. He desired to see healthy churches established, governed by faithful elders, maintaining sound doctrine and good works.

Be Missional! Together.

God calls his people to share the gospel with relevance to all people. We have no greater example in Scripture than Paul, who sought "to become all things to all people," so that he might present the gospel in an understandable way no matter what the context. Missiologists call this contextualization. Paul said, "I do it all for the sake of the gospel..." Do you?

Walk! Together.

Each of us carry many burdens throughout life. The greatest is the burden of our sin. Galatians 6:1-10 instructs believers to walk together through accountable relationships, bearing one another's burdens, and looking for opportunities to practice good works. Community Groups at RHC provide the context for this to happen on a regular basis.

The Point of It All

Renowned author Jim Harrison says, "The answer is always in the entire story, not just a piece of it.” That is certainly true of the Book of Ecclesiastes. If every pursuit is ultimately unsatisfying, what is the solution to life? What is the point of it all? The final passage of the book teaches us that we can find freedom from vanity by fearing God and keeping his commands. On this side of the cross, we understand this only happens through the gospel.

Two Ways to Live

Using Tripp & Tim Lane's Heat, Thorns, Cross, Fruit structure, this sermon explains that we need a heart remade and constantly renewed by grace to walk the path of wisdom.

We all have a tendency to see what is in front of us more clearly, but not see what is in the distance all that well. Ecclesiastes 9 teaches to enjoy life with the end in view.
Most of the time we think about sin being something around us rather than in us. Ecclesiastes 7:15-29 teaches us about the complexity and universality of sin. It also points out that the image of God in us has been distorted by our sinfulness. However, the gospel teaches us that Jesus is renewing the gospel in all who believe in him.

Will the wise life provide ultimate meaning? Is it reasonable to find lasting satisfaction in our work? Ecclesiastes 2:12-26 instructs us to enjoy life as a gift from God and live for his pleasure rather than worshiping other pursuits in life. How do we live for his pleasure? Faith.

What's the Point of it All?

We're all searching for meaning, purpose, and satisfaction in life? The Book of Ecclesiastes jolts us by declaring that all of life's pursuits are vain, meaningless, absurd, futile, and unreasonable. That is, every pursuit is pointless and unprofitable apart from God and his will for us. This series will show how Jesus makes all the difference.

The Supremacy of Christ in the Face of Legalism

In Colossians 2:16-23, Paul tells the saints they can walk in freedom from legalism because they have been filled in Christ. Legalists seek to perform their way to God's approval. Paul says, "Jesus is enough." If we have him, we are completely loved and completely accepted by God."

Some Christians assume we only need God's grace when we enter the Christian life. Paul deconstructs that notion in Colossians 2:6-7. He says, "After receiving the gospel, we must live a life consistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ."

The Supremacy of Christ in Creation and Redemption

In one of the greatest passages in the New Testament on the person and work of Christ, Paul highlights the supremacy of Jesus in creation and redemption. The only right response to the picture of Jesus in Colossians 1:15-23 is worship. Jesus Christ is supreme. Is he supreme in your life?

Staring into the Face of Suffering

We all face trials and suffering. If you have not experienced a heavy dose of suffering yet, you probably will. How can we endure? The Power of Christian Hope teaches us that we can endure suffering to the glory of God because Jesus is the solution to our suffering.

The way we spend our money reflects what we believe about God and what we truly treasure in life. Jesus teaches that disciples are to reflect the values of the kingdom by using money in such a way that shows that money is not their treasure, God is.

Our Pursuit of God

The Lord's prayer possesses both childlike simplicity and profound depth. As Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray and fast in the Sermon on the Mount, he instructs them to seek the praise of God rather than the praise of man.

How Will You Spend Your Life?

How will you spend your life? We will all have to give answer for how we spent our lives when Jesus returns to judge all people. In Matthew 25:14-30, he teaches us that we need to be ready for his return by investing faithfully in the kingdom of Christ. What is the Power of Christian Hope? Jesus saves us from a wasted life.

Unwavering Trust

Does worry and anxiety consume your life? In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus teaches us that even material necessities are not valid causes of worry but that we must reflect the kingdom of God by our unwavering trust in his gracious provision. In the midst of a life filled with many uncertainties, Jesus tells us that some things are certain. He gives us six great reasons to live without worrying. Will you believe them and trust God’s gracious provision?

True Devotion to God

Jesus teaches us that true devotion to God flows from a heart of worship rather than external righteousness. In Matthew 15:1-20, Jesus confronted the legalistic hypocrisy of the Pharisees and taught them, the crowds, and his disciples about the centrality of the heart in worship. Our devotion and good deeds necessarily flows from the inside out.

Doubt, Belief, and the Deathproof King

Jeroslav Pelikan said, "If Jesus rose from the dead, nothing else matters; and if Jesus didn't rise from the dead, nothing else matters." In John 20:24-31 we are confronted with the resurrected Christ. We learn that Jesus meets us in our doubt and gives life to all who believe in him. His resurrection demands a response from all people. What is the power of Christian hope? In the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, death has been crushed to death, and the restoration of all things is near.

The Finished Work of Christ

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is the climactic moment in the storyline of God's redemptive plan in the pages of the Bible. In John 18-19, we learn that Jesus accomplished his mission of redemption through his sacrificial death on the cross. Though he was rejected by men and suffered unjustly, it was all part of the promised plan of God as he voluntarily laid down his life for the redemption of sinful people. The cross truly changes everything.

The Supreme Value of the Kingdom of Christ

Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure . . ." In this short parable, Jesus taught his disciples that his kingdom of so supremely valuable that they should joyfully sacrifice everything in order to possess it. The treasure of Christ outshines all other competitors and delivers the greatest reward because it restores the rule and reign of Christ and provides lasting satisfaction.

A Plea for Full-Blooded Disciples

Discipleship is not just for the "super-Christian." In Luke 14, Jesus addresses the crowds and calls all of them to love him supremely, follow him sacrificially, and to count the cost wisely. The cost of discipleship is great, but the cost of non-discipleship is even greater.

Great Faith in the Authority of Christ

Great faith is cultivated by complete humility and unyielding trust in the absolute authority of Christ. Jesus marvels at such faith. Moreover, because the authority of Christ provides the foundation for the Great Commission, great faith in the authority of Christ is essential to fulfilling the mission of Christ.

Embracing Jesus on the Road to Discipleship

Everyone must respond to the person and work of Jesus Christ. Some embrace him as the Son of God. Others reject him as a liar, lunatic, or reduce him to a great moral teacher. The Gospel of Mark teaches that true disciples embrace the person of Christ, the work of Christ, and the will of Christ.
